Tomorrow….

Posted by Comments Off on Tomorrow….

Madness! I think I’ve gone completely bonkers but that’s okay, you only live once so you may as well live it up while you can. You never know what’s around the corner so its best to just go flat out and damn the consequences. I’ve been spending money like its going out of fashion and I’m slapping myself for being so frivolous but what the hey, its only money. Its easy for me to say, but on the same breath I’m always looking over my shoulder, waiting for some disaster to catch up on me and bring me back into the realm of reality. Which isn’t too difficult considering the economy is a fragile thing, especially so, when the US is spending money in much the same way as I am, so this level of paranoia I constantly castigate myself with, isn’t without some basis in reality even if it is probably somewhat exaggerated. A billion dollars a month to finance a false war in Iraq and indeed the so called “War on Terror” is nothing to throw away to the devil but shit, I guess a lot rides on this invasion. Oil is fast becoming a rare commodity and our lifestyle depends on consuming the stuff, so the old maxim “you gotta spend money, to make money” rings true and it would be laughable if only it wasn’t so fucking tragic.

The whole tragedy is that we hang upon our holier than thou cross, exclaiming our moral superiority when the truth is we are just as base as the enemy if not more so. How many of us just sit around worrying about our own welfare and whether or not interest rates are going to rise or if our job security will be intact tomorrow and as we chew on this worrisome fat the other side of the world is killing each other because we have mandated the powers that be to essentially take what it needs. Sure we have excuses and we have our fears that our worry may be taken away from us but does it justify acts of deception and agression and cruelty.

It wasn’t that long ago that the airwaves were declaring weapons of mass destruction and preemptive strikes to extinguish the perceived (or manufactured?) threats against our security and John Howard bowing before the great warlord Bush junior and we were all lapping in the fear with relish. And now? No real mentioning of past fiascos, just one party remaining steadfast and the other promising some sort of amends by pulling troops out of Iraq. Perhaps whats done is done and alls we can do is forget the mess and concentrate on our worrying about inconsequential finances. So I spent a few hundred dollars today on some performance RAM that I don’t essentially need but wanted; wanted to ease the burden of my worries for a few brief seconds. It amounts to nothing in the great scheme of things. Tomorrow more abuses will be served and I’ll sit here worrying if the order I placed will even get to my doorstep. I never said I was better than anyone, I merely pointed out the folly of this society or the folly of my own neurosis by going global but I’m pretty sure tomorrow in the election campaign the silence of past follies will remain muted. Not because there isn’t any merit or justification in rousing old demons from the shadows, but only because no one here is free from the guilt that surrounds the tragedy.

In our silence and our fear we condone the next air strike that kills that child or the next enemy noncombatant whose renditioned to Egypt or Jordan for interrogation (tortue) or the next person to be detained and although in some instances it may be called for, we create a system that in effect is against our own integrity and values and is becoming the very thing we fear. Tomorrow some new legislation will pass and tomorrow some more of our value will be deminished. Tomorrow, your phone will be tapped. Tomorrow your emails will be scanned. Tomorrow your mother will be suspected. Tomorrow….  Never mind our liberty what about the damn interest rates. Go figure!

Ahh well….back to researching overclocking.

Welcome to my nightmare.

Posted by Comments Off on Welcome to my nightmare.

Rush! Rush! Rush! For what? Welcome to the rat race. Racing to get this, that or the other done. Stakes are high but still, for what or who? Do we ever question or have a realisation that this whole facade is merely a futile effort in defining oneself as a somebody, a somebody worthwhile, productive and of value, when the chips fall, coming down to the lowest common denominator, all it amounts to is dissatisfaction, disillusionment, defeat and slavery. Being crammed inside a train, shuttling away to a sterile workstation, doing the same thing over and over and needing it to be done yesterday makes me wonder why? Why go through the motions day after day, accumulating a few dollars to maintain a lifestyle that in itself is meaningless. Why? Amassing a meager stash of wealth, for what? Having and getting more money, bathing in the glory of selfishness and prosperity, my pile is bigger than your pile. Ner ner na ner ner. All for the “God of Money”. A valueless thing in itself. A creation determining master and slave. I’m at loathe towards myself sometimes, bordering on hatred and disgust, because I am so lame as to worship at the altar of this faceless, valueless thing, a thing that robs me of a minimum 38 hours a week not including the 1o hours a week consumed in travel to the mills of time. If this is the norm or average then about 13 continuous years out of my life will be spent grinding the wheels of time into dust. Then to slap insult upon injury, approximately 4.5 years out of that 13 is expended just for the state, tax consumes 4.5 years out of my life.

Time is probably the most valuable commodity any of us have yet a good portion of it is spent enslaved to status, “productivity” and self esteem pulled from an ATM as a friend of mine (thanks L 😉 ) so eloquently extols in ironic self deprecation. Then out of this status or transacted self esteem, the money brokers, financial institutions, bankers and elitists who create this valueless esteem then tax us for the privilege of having this non entity in our pockets while they smile all the way to world dominion. Why then buy into this falsity? This is my existential crisis. Why indeed? Why not as they used to say “Turn on, tune in and drop out”? What benefit is this rat race? Could my time be better spent or do I further pursue the illusion, distracted by the lure of manufactured esteem and selling myself to the cold hands that feed, buying into the dehumanising system, devaluing what it actually means to be human.

Welcome to my nightmare, the rat race turns away no one, it gladly accepts you into serfdom. Your master will dish out your self worth and extract another piece of your soul at your next visitation to the ATM confessional. Smile, there is no hell. We’re already circling within its confines and we rejoice in apathy and servitude while we wither away any significance our presence may bestow 🙂

Downloadible rainbow.

Posted by Comments Off on Downloadible rainbow.

It has to be said that Radiohead’s revolutionary stance to have their new album In Rainbows available for download online is commendable and impressive. To further confound the Music Industry Mediacrats, Radiohead are asking the punter to decide its worth. This is like WTF…here’s a totally progressive mindset that is unheard of in this grab for dosh consumer society. If I was a fan I’d give em a few dollars for an album download, but alas they aren’t my cup of tea.

I’ll see if Trent Reznor can keep to his discourse on having a future Nine Inch Nails album available for purchase online for something like 4 bucks, I’ll be there. In the mean time I’ll take heed of what he said at the Hordern Pavilion gig a couple of weeks ago, “steal” em. It’s not like I’m averse to paying for downloads but my gripe is the price is too high for what I’m getting and the price of Cd’s aren’t reasonable either. I’ve bought a few albums from Telstra BigPond and NineMSN but I’m always paranoid that somehow I’ll lose the license when I upgrade my PC hardware and I have to reinstall Windows, I’d be a lot more secure and have peace of mind if there was no DRM bullshit attached to the files. I’ve burnt most of the music onto CD, which is fine, I have them in some sort of backed up form; however if I want to then rip them back onto some other medium I’ll lose quality out of the music I paid top dollar for. It’s not like they were four dollar downloads that I could just buy some more license’s for without too much drama, they’re not that far removed from what an actual CD costs. I can only hope that I can recover the license from either site when I upgrade and I haven’t been able to get a definitive yay or nay in my email correspondence with them when making inquiries.

So to say Radiohead has their finger on the pulse is an understatement, when it comes to advancing the music industry into the 21st century I believe they are pretty much the fore runners in the abolition of the ghastly DRM media autocracy and the rip-off these executives in the Music Industry are instilling upon the punters. I really love the automatic responses from these executive clowns when they declare that Radiohead have a large and ready fan base and that they can essentially afford to experiment in this way, whereas bands that aren’t in such fortunate positions are still at the mercy of the likes of Sony BMG and Universal, it’s such a load of bollocks and FUD! I have a more optimistic outlook in the capacity of punters to support the music they love and give the artist their due recompense. The bonus of having this method of consumerism is that the the fan base will invariably grow from the added media coverage in the first instance and the possibility to sample the music at a cost which the punter can decide in the second. The real people that lose on this deal are the major labels unless they conform to what the consumer wants, a fair deal. While they scratch their heads wondering how they can extract maximum funds for even more restrictive formats, channel BT and others will continue to vote with the click of a mouse. Having bought online music legitimately I have been less than satisfied with the quality of the tracks, I don’t even get a lousy play list file with them and the playback continuity of some albums on my Creative Zen is jerky, although I’m not sure if that is just a limitation of the mp3 player or having an mp3 of two tracks that blend together on a CD and are two separate mp3’s, but you’d think that it has something to do with not having a corresponding m3u file or the way they ripped the tracks.

Well hopefully this new approach provides inspiration for other bands to accept the independent challenge. It’ll make for some interesting stats regardless.
